Abstract

Water turbidity is one of the key indicators used to evaluate water quality because it reflects the amount of suspended particles in a water body. Monitoring turbidity through field observations provides reliable results, but it often requires considerable time, cost, and manpower, especially when covering a large number of locations. This study aimed to assess water turbidity in 16 lakes (situ) across West Java Province by applying the Normalized Difference Turbidity Index (NDTI) derived from Sentinel-2A satellite imagery and comparing the results with field measurements of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and turbidity. The study employed descriptive, comparative, and spatial approaches. Satellite images were processed using Google Earth Engine, while field data were obtained through direct measurements and laboratory analysis. The findings showed that NDTI was generally able to represent the spatial pattern of water turbidity observed in the field. Lakes with relatively higher NDTI values tended to have higher TSS and turbidity values, although differences were found at several locations due to local environmental conditions and variations in water characteristics. These results indicate that NDTI derived from Sentinel-2A imagery can support efficient spatial monitoring of inland water quality and complement conventional field observations.
