Abstract
Aluminum–silicon alloy is widely used in engineering and manufacturing industries due to its low density, excellent corrosion resistance, and good castability. However, its hardness must be improved to meet the requirements of applications demanding superior mechanical properties. This study aims to investigate the effect of a 40% CaCO₃ solution as a quenching medium on the hardness and microstructure of an aluminum–silicon alloy after solution treatment and artificial aging. In addition, the study examines the relationship between microstructural characteristics, elemental composition, and hardness changes. An experimental method was employed by subjecting the specimens to solution treatment, quenching using a 40% CaCO₃ solution, and artificial aging. Material characterization was conducted through Vickers hardness testing, while the microstructure and elemental composition were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM–EDX). The results showed that the average hardness increased from 88.84 HV in the raw material to 112.44 HV after quenching in the 40% CaCO₃ solution, representing an improvement of 26.56%. Following the artificial aging process, the average hardness reached 103.18 HV, corresponding to an increase of 16.14% compared to the raw material. SEM observations revealed a more homogeneous precipitate distribution within the aluminum matrix, while EDX analysis confirmed that aluminum remained the dominant element with a mass fraction of 57.93 wt.%. The findings demonstrate that a 40% CaCO₃ solution is an effective alternative quenching medium for enhancing the hardness of aluminum–silicon alloys through microstructural modification induced by heat treatment.
