Abstract
The provision of educational facilities for children with special needs in Indonesia still faces issues of unequal access, limited infrastructure, and the low quality of built environments that are responsive to user diversity. This condition is reflected in SLB Krida Utama 2 Loceret, Nganjuk, which has not yet optimally implemented accessibility, spatial integration, and learning environments that support the sensory characteristics of children with special needs. These issues highlight the need for a design approach that is not only function-oriented but also responsive to users’ behavioral aspects and spatial experiences. This study aims to formulate a redesign concept for a special education school (SLB) through an inclusive design approach based on sensory experience. The method employed is qualitative descriptive, using field observations, literature review, and precedent studies, which are analyzed to identify gaps between existing conditions and design standards. The results are synthesized into design criteria and strategies that are contextual to user needs and site characteristics. The inclusive design approach focuses on improving accessibility, spatial legibility, and orientation, while the sensory approach is applied through architectural elements such as color, texture, lighting, and acoustics. This concept is expected to create a more adaptive and inclusive learning environment that supports the learning process and the optimal development of students.
