Abstract

Trowulan District, designated as a National Cultural Heritage Area (Kawasan Cagar Budaya Nasional, KCBN), faces preservation challenges due to urbanization pressures and the planned relocation of the main function of the Majapahit Museum. This relocation risks causing functional degradation and the abandonment of the existing museum building, which holds significant collective memory value. This study aims to design Trowulan Innovation Square, a Creative Hub that revitalizes the former Majapahit Museum to accommodate creative economic activities and archaeological education for the local community. The design method employs a Non-Invasive Infill Development strategy. This approach prioritizes the protection of subsurface archaeological remains through the use of a modular steel frame system and a shallow raft foundation designed to be reversible (demountable). The design concept establishes an honest material dialogue between terracotta and contemporary material interventions, such as glass and steel, creating harmony without imitation. The design results demonstrate that the adaptive reuse of the building as an innovation center can mitigate the decline in the quality of the area. By integrating research, educational, and MSME development zones, the project not only preserves the physical building but also revitalizes the socio-economic value of the Trowulan area as an expression of generational responsibility in safeguarding Majapahit heritage.
