Abstract

Traditional markets play an important role as centers of economic activity as well as spaces for social interaction in urban communities. In Surakarta, the existence of traditional markets is closely related to cultural identity and the development of local culinary potential. However, along with urban development and the emergence of modern retail facilities and contemporary culinary businesses, the competitiveness of traditional markets has declined. One example is Harjodaksino Market, which still faces various issues in terms of physical condition, zoning, circulation, and supporting facilities based on the Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) results. This study aims to formulate a redesign concept for Harjodaksino Market by integrating traditional market functions with a culinary center through a contextual architectural approach. The methods used include field observation, interviews, documentation, literature review, precedent studies, and POE analysis. The contextual architectural approach is applied to create a design that responds to the surrounding environment, local culture, and community activities. The design results indicate that the integration of trade and culinary functions through the market embracing culinary concept can enhance spatial quality, create interconnected activities, and strengthen the identity of the area. Zoning arrangements that separate wet and dry market areas, structured circulation systems, and the provision of social spaces such as culinary areas become key strategies in improving comfort and attractiveness. Thus, the redesign of Harjodaksino Market is expected to create a space that is not only functional and comfortable, but also competitive, sustainable, and capable of supporting cultural preservation and local economic development in Surakarta.
