Abstract

The Batang Integrated Industrial Estate (KITB) has triggered socio-cultural impacts specifically a shift in cultural identity stemming from the rapid influx of thousands of migrant workers without a corresponding readiness of social spaces. This has led to a divide between migrant workers and local residents and a reduction in spaces for communal interaction. This project aims to develop a concept and design for a Community Center grounded in a socio-cultural approach to integrate these two groups within the KITB area of Batang Regency on a site of approximately 20,000 m². The methodology involved primary data collection through observation and secondary data gathering via literature reviews, Regional Spatial Plans, Statistics Indonesia data, and precedent studies. These data were analyzed using a socio-cultural lens to formulate concepts for zoning, massing, and architectural expression. The design concept integrates coastal Batang Batik motifs, Javanese communal building typologies, and the local fishing community's wisdom into the facade elements, zoning, materials, and spatial layout. The design comprises three main building masses the Cultural Hub, the Community & Public Square, and the Economic Zone arranged in a hierarchy ranging from public to semi-private spaces, and incorporates Green Open Spaces that serve as both a buffer and a magnet for activity. This design offers a model for social infrastructure that strengthens the socio-cultural cohesion of the Batang community amidst ongoing industrialization.
