Abstract

The phenomenon of klitih in the Special Region of Yogyakarta represents a form of youth violence that reflects not only criminal behavior but also broader psychosocial and environmental issues. Current approaches, which tend to be punitive, are considered insufficient in addressing the need for rehabilitation and social reintegration; therefore, an alternative approach through human-centered and rehabilitative architectural design is required. This study aims to design a juvenile correctional facility based on restorative justice principles as a space for learning, psychosocial recovery, and social reintegration for youth involved in klitih. The method includes literature review, case studies, site analysis, and design synthesis based on rehabilitative architecture and environmental psychology approaches. The results indicate that restorative justice principles can be implemented through the creation of communal and participatory spaces, contemplative therapeutic environments, creative-expressive spaces, and the integration of public and correctional areas. The design concept produces a built environment that is non-repressive, supportive, inclusive, and transformative, in which architecture functions as a medium for behavioral transformation, self-reflection, and the reconstruction of social relationships.
