Abstract
The series Jalinan Terlarang explores the true-to-life story and heavy burden borne by the "sandwich generation" through the character of Syafa, who faces relentless pressure from her family's demands. The term "sandwich generation" refers to individuals responsible for two generations: their parents (or other family members) and themselves. The issue of the sandwich generation has evolved into a cultural topic widely discussed, particularly on social media. This study aims to deconstruct the myths surrounding the sandwich generation by employing Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory—specifically denotation and connotation—to represent these myths, combined with Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, with data collected through observation and purposive sampling; the units of analysis included scenes, audio, and visuals. Data validity was ensured through theoretical triangulation. Observations revealed three primary myths across the first three episodes. First is the myth that "children are family assets and investments," Second is the myth that "children must remain dutiful to their parents throughout their lives," illustrated in scenes where Syafa suffers a miscarriage and where she sits grieving on the stairs. Third is the myth that "silent sacrifice is the ultimate form of familial virtue," represented in scenes where Syafa weeps alone on the street and screams hysterically as thugs loot her mother's house. In conclusion, the series offers a sharp critique of how these myths and excessive family demands often strip children of their rights, happiness, and freedom.
