Abstract

Aluminum–silicon (Al–Si) alloys are widely used in the manufacturing industry due to their low density, good castability, and high wear resistance. However, their mechanical properties can still be improved through heat treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of water and 30% calcium carbonate (CaCO3) solution as quenching media on the hardness and microstructure of aluminum–silicon (Al–Si) alloy after solution treatment, quenching, and artificial aging. The research was conducted using Al–Si alloy specimens characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and evaluated using the Vickers hardness test. The specimens were subjected to solution treatment, followed by quenching in water and a 30% CaCO3 solution, while some specimens were subsequently treated by artificial aging at 200°C. The results showed that the hardness of the raw material was 88.84 HV, which increased to 94.02 HV after water quenching and to 97.80 HV after quenching in a 30% CaCO3 solution. After artificial aging, the hardness became 88.82 HV for the water-quenched specimen and 93.50 HV for the CaCO3-quenched specimen. SEM-EDX observations confirmed that aluminum remained the dominant element in all specimens, while heat treatment affected the elemental distribution and microstructural characteristics without altering the alloy’s fundamental composition. It can be concluded that the 30% CaCO3 solution provided the highest hardness improvement compared with water, indicating its potential as a more effective alternative quenching medium for aluminum–silicon alloys.
