Abstract
Aluminum–silicon alloys are widely used in industry due to their low density, good corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties that can be enhanced through heat treatment. This study aims to analyze the effect of water and a 30% CaCO₃ solution as quenching media on the hardness and crystal structure of aluminum–silicon alloys after quenching and artificial aging. The material used was an Al–Si alloy containing 10.10 wt.% Si, which was subjected to solution treatment at 580°C, followed by quenching using water and a 30% CaCO₃ solution, and subsequently artificial aging at 200°C. Characterization was carried out using the Vickers hardness test and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the 30% CaCO₃ solution produced the highest hardness value of 97.80 HV, representing a 10.08% increase compared to the raw material (88.84 HV). After artificial aging, the hardness decreased to 93.50 HV but remained higher than the initial condition. XRD analysis indicated that no new phases were formed; instead, changes occurred in crystal orientation, crystallite size, FWHM values, and the degree of crystallinity. Therefore, the 30% CaCO₃ solution was more effective than water as a quenching medium for improving hardness and maintaining the crystal structure stability of aluminum–silicon alloys after heat treatment.
