Abstract
Beauty privilege remains a widely discussed and pervasive issue in society. Numerous studies have examined this phenomenon, particularly as it is represented in various media, including film. This study focuses on analyzing the representation of beauty privilege in the film titled “The Ugly Stepsister.” The film “The Ugly Stepsister” was selected because it presents a narrative on how a woman’s beauty can lead to certain social treatments, such as the emergence of a privilege. This study employs a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis method, which encompasses three levels of meaning denotation, connotation, and myth and is supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation with a reflective approach. The aim of this study is to analyze how the issue of beauty privilege is represented in the film “The Ugly Stepsister.” Primary data was collected from the film through the analysis of scenes, narratives, and visual symbols, while secondary data was obtained through literature reviews and related sources. The results of this study indicate that this film also critiques how the issue of beauty privilege arises due to differences in physical appearance or beauty standards among female characters, which impacts social treatment, opportunities, and recognition particularly during the feudal era set against a royal backdrop in the 1880s.
