Abstract

Indonesia has a high biodiversity of herbal plants, but its existence faces challenges in the form of land conversion, a lack of integrated conservation facilities, and low public awareness of medicinal plant preservation. Karanganyar Regency has a mountainous environment that supports the development of conservation areas and herbal-based educational tourism. Therefore, it is necessary to design a Herbal Botanical Garden that can integrate conservation, education, research, and recreation functions with an ecological architectural approach. The goal of this design is to produce a concept for a Herbal Botanical Garden area in Karanganyar that is responsive to site conditions and increases public awareness of the sustainable use of herbal plants. The methods used include data collection through literature studies and precedent studies, as well as the formulation of a regional design concept based on ecological architectural principles. The design results in a 6.12-hectare botanical garden area concept with an organic mass pattern that adapts to the natural contours of the land, the implementation of natural ventilation and lighting, the use of environmentally friendly local materials, and a sustainable water management system. This design is expected to become a means of herbal plant conservation as well as an environmentally-based educational tourism destination in Karanganyar Regency.
