Abstract
Tambakrejo, Semarang, is a residential area facing issues related to housing density, limited residential land, and the need to provide adequate and sustainable housing. These conditions highlight the need for an alternative vertical housing solution that not only meets residential needs but also supports the self-sufficiency and environmental quality of its residents. This study aims to design a rental apartment (Rusunawa) in Tambakrejo by implementing the concepts of vertical urban farming and resource recycling through a sustainable architecture approach. The method employed is qualitative descriptive analysis through literature reviews, precedent studies, field observations, documentation, and site and space requirement analyses. The design results indicate that vertical urban farming can be integrated into building elements and communal spaces as part of residents’ productive activities. Meanwhile, the resource recycling concept is implemented through water and waste management to improve resource efficiency within the residential environment. The sustainable architecture approach is also applied through the optimization of natural lighting and ventilation, vegetation, and open-space management. In addition, Islamic architectural values are incorporated by emphasizing the relationship between humans and God, between people, and between humans and nature. The proposed design is expected to provide a vertical housing environment that is not only habitable but also productive, self-sufficient, and sustainable for the community
