Abstract
The horticulture sector requires efficient irrigation systems to maintain soil moisture and support crop productivity. This study aims to design an Internet of Things (IoT)-based automatic plant watering system powered primarily by solar energy. The system utilizes an ESP32, a solar panel, a 12V 12Ah battery, a Solar Charge Controller (SCC), a soil moisture sensor, an INA219 sensor, and an RTC module. Watering control employs a hysteresis control method with two threshold variations: ON <45% / OFF ≥75% and ON <35% / OFF ≥70%. Monitoring data is displayed on an I2C LCD and transmitted in real-time to the Blynk and Firebase applications. Test results indicate that the ON <45% / OFF ≥75% variation yields superior performance, achieving an average soil moisture of 57.64%, water usage of 132 L, and energy consumption of 23.10 Wh. In contrast, the ON <35% / OFF ≥70% variation results in an average soil moisture of 52.78%, water usage of 148 L, and energy consumption of 25.91 Wh. The findings demonstrate that the ON <45% / OFF ≥75% variation is more effective at maintaining soil moisture while utilizing water and energy more efficiently, thereby supporting the implementation of solar-powered smart irrigation systems.
