Abstract

This Aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy is widely used in the automotive and manufacturing industries due to its low density, good corrosion resistance, and excellent castability. To improve its mechanical properties, particularly hardness, heat treatment processes such as quenching and artificial aging are commonly applied. This study aims to investigate the effect of a 35% calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) solution as a quenching medium on the hardness and microstructure of aluminum silicon alloy after quenching and artificial aging treatments. The research was conducted by heating Al-Si alloy specimens to 580°C for 75 minutes, followed by rapid cooling (quenching) using water and a 35% CaCO₃ solution. Subsequently, selected specimens underwent artificial aging at 200°C for 20 minutes. Microstructural characterization was performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), while hardness testing was carried out using the Vickers hardness method. The results showed that the quenching and artificial aging processes caused significant changes in the microstructure of the aluminum-silicon alloy. SEM observations revealed a more uniform distribution of silicon particles and a more homogeneous microstructure compared to the untreated material. EDX analysis indicated that aluminum (Al) and silicon (Si) were the dominant elements present in the alloy. Hardness testing demonstrated an increase in hardness after heat treatment, particularly in specimens quenched using the 35% CaCO₃ solution. Therefore, the 35% CaCO₃ quenching medium positively affected both the hardness and microstructural characteristics of the aluminum-silicon alloy.
