Abstract

Traditional weed control using hoes requires a long time and drains the farmers' physical energy. This study aims to design, manufacture, and test the performance of a mechanical weeding tool utilizing a 1 HP (746 Watts) 4-stroke brush cutter engine as the main prime mover. The research methods include component design, tool fabrication, and actual field performance testing on a test area of 1 kotak (1,400 m2). This tool utilizes a reduction gearbox with a 30:1 ratio to rotate the shaft and weeding blade, which has a total diameter of 30 cm, a working width of 15 cm, and a plate thickness of 2 mm. The mechanical analysis results show that the engine speed of 6500 RPM was successfully reduced to 216.67 RPM, thereby increasing the working torque to 26.27 Nm with a cutting force at the tip of the blade reaching 175.13 N. Based on the material strength analysis, the minimum safe shaft diameter is 17.49 mm. The field test results showed that the tool has an Effective Field Capacity (EFC) of 0.0233 Ha/hour with a Field Efficiency reaching 77.67%. From the economic aspect, the tool operation only requires 3.6 Liters of gasoline with a total operating cost of Rp 130,000.- for a 1-kotak field. Compared to the manual method which requires a cost of Rp 800,000.-, the use of this mechanical weeding tool is able to provide operational cost savings of 83.75% and significantly cut working time.
