Abstract
Aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) is an alloy widely used in the automotive industry due to its lightweight properties and good castability; however, its mechanical properties still need to be improved through heat treatment. This study aims to analyze the effect of 35% CaCO₃ solution as a quenching medium compared to water during quenching and artificial aging processes on the hardness and crystal structure of Al-Si alloy. Cylindrical specimens (ø50 mm, t=20 mm) were subjected to solution treatment, quenching, and artificial aging at a temperature of 200°C. Hardness testing was carried out using the Vickers method (100 kgf), while crystal structure characterization was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to identify phases, FWHM values, and crystallite size through the Scherrer equation. The results show that water quenching increased hardness by 5.83% to 94.02 HV, but decreased back to 88.82 HV after artificial aging due to the over-aging phenomenon. In contrast, quenching with 35% CaCO₃ solution produced a hardness increase of 26.76% to 112.62 HV, and after artificial aging it remained at 106.72 HV (+20.12%). XRD analysis revealed that all samples were dominated by the aluminum (Al) phase with silicon (Si) as a secondary phase, with no new phases formed, and crystallite sizes varying in the range of 16.38–104.95 nm. It is concluded that 35% CaCO₃ solution is more effective as a quenching medium in improving and maintaining the hardness of aluminum-silicon alloy compared to water.
