Abstract
This study examines the defense mechanisms and personality structure of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The objectives are to identify the types of defense mechanisms displayed by Eggsy and to analyze his personality through the id, ego, and superego. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a psychoanalytic approach, with data collected from dialogues, scenes, and actions in the film and script, then classified and interpreted based on Anna Freud’s and Sigmund Freud’s theories. The findings reveal seven defense mechanisms: denial, repression, projection, and displacement (two instances each), sublimation and reaction formation (three instances each), and rationalization (four instances), the most dominant mechanism. The id dominates the earlier scenes through impulsive behavior, the superego prevails in moral tests during training, and the ego ultimately becomes dominant in the climax, integrating the id’s energy and the superego’s moral orientation into adaptive action. The study concludes that Eggsy’s development moves from impulsive immaturity toward an integrated, morally grounded identity.
