Abstract
Protecting local coffee is not simply a matter of formal legal certainty, it also involves strengthening communal economic value and achieving sustainable development through the Geographical Indication (GI) mechanism. This research analyzes the provisions of Law Number 20 of 2016 on Trademarks and Geographical Indications in protecting coffee GI in Indonesia, and examines the alignment of this policy with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The method used is normative juridical with a statutory approach, through a literature study of primary and secondary legal materials analyzed descriptively and analytically. The results show that Law No. 20 of 2016 has provided a legal basis through the recognition of non-temporal communal rights and the first to file principle, along with guidance and supervision provisions in Articles 53, 70, and 71. Its implementation, however, is still hindered by the complexity of registration, the low capacity of farmers and MPIG, and weak post-certification supervision that opens gaps for bad faith practices. Coffee GI aligns with SDG 1, SDG 8, and SDG 12 through premium pricing mechanisms, job creation, and sustainable agricultural standardization, yet Law No. 20 of 2016 has not explicitly integrated SDG principles and remains unsynchronized with Presidential Regulation No. 111 of 2022. This research recommends strengthening guidance and supervision that internalizes sustainability principles, which from the perspective of Islamic law aligns with the principle of hifdz al-mal in maqashid sharia as an effort to achieve sustainable economic justice for coffee farmers.
