Abstract

The increasingly competitive manufacturing industry has driven the adoption of automated machining technologies, including the use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines supported by modern programming systems. This study aims to compare the performance of two CNC programming methods—SolidWorks CAM and Artificial Intelligence (AI/ChatGPT)—in terms of dimensional accuracy and surface roughness in the CNC turning process. The material used was Aluminium 6061 with three specimens per method, machined on a 2-axis CNC turning machine. G-code was generated automatically through SolidWorks CAM and via prompt-based ChatGPT. Surface roughness testing was conducted using a Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-210 Surface Roughness Tester, while dimensional inspection was performed using a Digital Caliper at seven measurement points covering the diameter and length of a stepped cylindrical workpiece. Results showed that the SolidWorks CAM method produced an average surface roughness of Ra 0.432 µm (grade N5, ISO 1997), whereas the AI method yielded Ra 1.105 µm (grade N6, ISO 1997). In dimensional testing, the average deviation of the SolidWorks CAM method was consistently smaller than that of the AI method, particularly in axial length dimensions such as Total Length (0.18 mm vs. 0.27 mm) and Ø18 mm Length (−0.03 mm vs. −0.17 mm). The SolidWorks CAM method produced superior surface finish and dimensional accuracy compared to the AI method, indicating that the choice of programming method should consider the precision requirements of the desired product.
