Abstract

The provision of forage feed is an important factor in livestock farming, particularly in the grass chopping process, which is still widely performed manually and requires considerable time and labor. This study aims to design and implement an Arduino Uno-based automatic grass chopping machine equipped with an RPM monitoring system, motor overcurrent protection, and safety features. The system utilizes an E18-D80NK infrared proximity sensor to detect the presence of grass, an NJK-5002C Hall Effect sensor to monitor motor rotational speed, and an ACS758 current sensor to detect overcurrent conditions. The speed of a 24 V 500 W DC motor is controlled using the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method through a MOSFET driver. The research method consisted of hardware design, software development, system implementation, and testing of individual components as well as the integrated system. The tests included motor speed control, infrared proximity sensor performance, RPM monitoring, motor current protection, and overall system integration. The test results showed that the motor speed increased with higher PWM values, reaching a maximum speed of 2653 RPM at PWM 255. The infrared proximity sensor was able to effectively detect objects up to a distance of 15 cm, while the Hall Effect sensor successfully displayed real-time RPM values. The current protection system automatically shut down the motor when an overcurrent condition occurred, thereby preventing motor damage. Based on the test results, the developed system was able to operate automatically, safely, and in accordance with the research objectives, thus improving the efficiency of the grass chopping process for livestock feed preparation.
