Abstract
Utilizing waste materials to enhance sustainability in construction involves incorporating waste as a substitute in concrete mixtures. This represents a positive innovation from both construction and environmental perspectives. As infrastructure development accelerates, the consumption of nonrenewable materials rises, threatening their long-term availability. In this study, Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) was produced using rice husk ash (RHA) as a cement substitute and waste concrete cylinders—processed into Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA)—as a substitute for natural coarse aggregate. A key advantage of SCC is its ability to flow and consolidate under its own weight without the need for mechanical vibration. The study aimed to determine the effects of using RHA and RCA on the workability and mechanical properties of SCC. Cylindrical specimens (30 cm diameter, 15 cm height) with a target strength of 25 MPa were cast and cured for 28 days before undergoing compressive and splitting tensile strength testing. The SCC variations tested were: 0% RCA + 0% RHA, 0% RCA + 10% RHA, 40% RCA + 10% RHA, and 45% RCA + 10% RHA. The results indicate that adding RHA without RCA enhances the compressive and splitting tensile strengths of SCC. However, the inclusion of RCA led to a reduction in compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and workability; nevertheless, the findings suggest that RHA usage limits the decline in mechanical properties while simultaneously improving the workability of the SCC.
