Abstract

Engine performance is very important in the automotive world, especially in 4-stroke motorcycle engines, where most people want better performance. To improve engine performance, many methods can be applied, one of which is replacing the piston. Different types and shapes of pistons can alter the compression ratio. The purpose of this study is to determine the changes in the compression ratio, power, torque, and fuel consumption after changing the piston type. Tests were carried out on a 110cc automatic motorcycle using three types of piston specifications with a uniform diameter of 50 mm. The compression ratios obtained were 9.2:1 for the standard flat piston, 8.4:1 for the concave (dish) piston, and 10.5:1 for the convex (dome) piston. The results showed that the average engine power output increased with the higher compression ratio, yielding 6.7 HP on the dish piston, 6.9 HP on the flat piston, and 7.9 HP on the dome piston. Likewise, the average engine torque output increased from 14.91 Nm on the dish piston, 15.91 Nm on the flat piston, to 17.33 Nm on the dome piston. Analysis of fuel consumption testing with fixed RPM variations showed that the highest average fuel consumption occurred on the dish piston, where the fuel was consumed faster at each RPM. Conversely, the lowest fuel consumption was obtained on the dome piston. In conclusion, the maximum performance across all tested pistons was achieved by the convex/dome type piston with a compression ratio of 10.5:1.
