Abstract
Interpersonal power is a reciprocal dynamic that exerts influence within interpersonal relationships. This study examines how interpersonal power is formed, negotiated, and interpretedin the communication between the chairperson and members of the Muhammadiyah’s College Student Branch of Surakarta. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to explore the unique dynamics of power among members of the student organisation. Data collection was conducted using unstructured interviews with the subjects. The data were analysed using Joseph DeVito’s interpersonal power framework and supported by Michael Hecht’s Communication Theory of Identity. The results demonstrate how power is formed, negotiated, and interpreted in the process of interpersonal communication among student organisation members. This study may serve as a useful contribution to the development of student organisations.
