Abstract

Technological advancements in Industry 4.0 are driving the adoption of automation systems integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT) across various industrial sectors. The Industrial Automation Laboratory at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta already has a learning tool in the form of a conveyor trainer; however, it is not yet capable of simulating an automated material handling process that encompasses material identification, robotics, and IoT integration. This study aims to develop a learning tool in the form of an IoT-based automated material handling system capable of sorting metallic and non-metallic materials. The research methods include reverse engineering, system design, system development, system testing, statistical analysis, and evaluation of the learning tool. The system was developed using an infrared sensor, an inductive proximity sensor, a conveyor, a 4-DOF robotic arm, and an ESP32 microcontroller. The control logic was designed using a Sequential Ladder Diagram (SLD) before being implemented into an Arduino program. Testing was conducted using 30 samples consisting of aluminum foil, beverage cans, and plastic. The research results show that the system is capable of detecting and sorting both metallic and non-metallic materials with a 100% success rate. The results of the independent samples t-test indicate that there are no significant differences in sensor response time (p = 0.620) or robot arm movement time (p = 0.355) between metallic and non-metallic materials. The evaluation of the learning media showed that the system received positive feedback from users, thereby supporting the learning process in industrial automation labs through the integration of material handling, control systems, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) concepts. Thus, this research produced learning media that more accurately depicts the application of an IoT based automated material handling system compared to the learning media previously available in the laboratory.
