Abstract
Smartphone addiction is a non-physical addictive behavior characterized by uncontrolled smartphone use, repeated behavior, and negative consequences in life. In the I PACE models theory smartphone addiction can be influenced by personal factors (loneliness) and executive factors (self-control). The purpose of this study was to examine the regression relationship between loneliness and self-control on smartphone addiction in students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The method used was a quantitative correlation with a population of active undergraduate students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta class of 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025. The sampling technique used G-Power software and obtained a minimum sample of 132. This study used the UCLA Loneliness V3 scale measurement tool, an adaptation of the Indonesian version of the short self-control scale and the smartphone addiction scale short version that has been adapted into Indonesian, data collection was carried out through Google Form, WhatsApp media, Instagram and offline searches. The results of this study showed a simultaneous relationship between loneliness and self-control on smartphone addiction with a significance value of <.001 and an adjusted R2 of 0.135. The results of the partial test showed that there was no relationship between loneliness and smartphone addiction (p = 0,085), while there was a relationship between self-control and smartphone addiction (p <.001)
