Abstract

This study examines the influence of culture shock and self-esteem on the self-adjustment capacity of migrant students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. With 197 migrant student participants aged 18–24 years originating from outside Java Island, the study employed an explanatory quantitative approach and purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through three psychologically valid and reliable scales and subsequently analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results indicate that, simultaneously, culture shock and self-esteem exert a significant influence on self-adjustment, accounting for 13.4% of the variance in self-adjustment capacity. However, on a partial basis, only self-esteem demonstrated a significant positive effect, whereas culture shock did not yield a significant influence. The majority of respondents exhibited high levels of self-adjustment, moderate levels of culture shock, and moderate levels of self-esteem. These findings affirm the pivotal role of internal psychological factors particularly self-esteem in supporting the adaptation of migrant students. The practical implication is that universities are encouraged to develop orientation programs and psychological support initiatives that place emphasis on strengthening self-esteem, including group counseling, emotional regulation training, and intercultural activities, in order to facilitate and sustain an effective and enduring self- adjustment process among migrant students.
