Abstract

The utilization of solar energy as a renewable energy source has significant potential to meet electricity demands and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. However, the performance of solar panels can decrease due to their fixed position and the accumulation of dust or dirt on the panel surface. This study aims to design and evaluate a single-axis solar tracker system equipped with an automatic panel cleaning mechanism using a wiper to improve solar energy absorption. The system consists of LDR sensors for light intensity detection, an ESP32 microcontroller as the main controller, a linear actuator for panel movement, a stepper motor and a 12 V DC pump for the cleaning mechanism, and a solar panel connected to a solar charge controller (SCC) and a battery. The research method includes system design, prototype development, and field testing by comparing the performance of a static solar panel with that of the proposed automatic system. The measured parameters include voltage, current, and output power. The test results show that the solar tracker is capable of following the direction of sunlight based on LDR sensor readings and performing automatic panel cleaning according to a predetermined schedule. The implementation of the system improves solar energy 50 Wp absorption and maintains panel cleanliness, thereby sustaining optimal panel performance. The test results showed that the single-axis solar tracker system produced a higher average power output than the static panel, reaching 29.29 W under clear weather conditions and 24.19 W under partly cloudy conditions. These results indicate that the single-axis solar tracker increased the solar panel power output by 7.12–9.24% compared to the static panel. The developed system has the potential to support more efficient and sustainable utilization of solar energy
