Abstract

Steel corrosion in acidic environments causes significant economic and technical losses, necessitating the use of effective and environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of guava leaf extract (*Psidium guajava*) and chitosan as corrosion inhibitors for low-carbon steel in a 1 M HCl solution over a 14-day period. Four samples were tested: S1 (control/1 M HCl without inhibitor), S2 (1 M HCl + 400 ppm guava leaf extract), S3 (1 M HCl + 200 ppm chitosan), and S4 (1 M HCl + a combination of 400 ppm extract and 200 ppm chitosan). All test solutions were supplemented with 0.1% sodium benzoate and 0.1% potassium sorbate as preservatives, adjusted to pH 5.5, and subjected to immersion for 336 hours at 30±2°C. The results showed that guava leaf extract (S2) provided the highest inhibition efficiency at 57.14% with the lowest corrosion rate of 0.0997 mm/year, followed by chitosan (S3) at 46.43% with a corrosion rate of 0.124 mm/year; meanwhile, the combination of the two (S4) achieved only 39.29% inhibition efficiency with a corrosion rate of 0.141 mm/year, indicating an antagonistic effect. Consequently, guava leaf extract is recommended as an effective natural corrosion inhibitor for steel in acidic environments, whereas the combination of the extract and chitosan at a 2:1 ratio is not advised due to reduced inhibition effectiveness.
