Abstract
This study aims to describe the process of self-disclosure between siblings regarding romantic relationship experiences within the framework of Social Penetration Theory. This research used a descriptive qualitative method, with in-depth interviews conducted with three pairs of female siblings selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed through transcription, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source triangulation. The findings show that self-disclosure about romantic relationships among siblings was not opened intentionally, but was triggered by specific situations such as confusion within the relationship, emotionally difficult circumstances, or when the sibling had already become aware of the relationship through social media. At the initial stage, participants only shared general information such as the partner’s identity, background, and relationship status. As feelings of safety and trust increased, conversations became more casual and routine, until siblings served not only as listeners but also as sources of advice in romantic decision-making. At deeper levels, self-disclosure was marked by strong emotional expression, including crying when facing relationship pressure. However, disclosure remained selective because participants still withheld certain information. These findings indicate that closeness and trust established since childhood make self-disclosure among siblings occur more quickly, yet it remains shaped by situational context and the sibling’s response.
