Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of discrimination against Chinese Indonesians in the Pengepungan di bukit duri movie using the Roland Barthes semiotic approach. The film portrays various forms of discrimination experienced by Chinese Indonesians, including hate speech, social exclusion, unequal treatment, and physical violence, wich reflect power relations between majority and minority groups in Indonesia. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through scene observation, documentation, and literature review. Data analysis was conducted through Roland Barthes three levelsof meaning: denotation, conotation, and myth. The findings reveal that discrimination against Chinese Indonesians is represented through four stages of discrimination proposed by Gordon Allport : anti locution (hate speech), avoidance (social exclusion), discrimination (unequal treatment), and physical attack (physical attack violence). At the denotative level, the film depicts various discriminatory actions experienced by Chinese Indonesian characters. At the connotative level, these action represent social exclusion, marginalization, and unequal treatment based on ethnic identity. At the mythological level, the film reveals and ideology of power relations that positions indigenous Indonesians as the dominant group and Chinese Indonesians as the subordinate group. Film pengepungan di bukit duri not only prepresent interethnic conflict but also serves as social critique of discrimination, stereotypes, and power inequalities that continue to overshadow multicultural life in Indonesia.
