Abstract
A low power factor in inductive loads increases reactive power demand, power losses, and reduces the efficiency of electrical power systems. This study aims to design and implement a multi-step Automatic Power Factor Correction (APFC) system based on ESP32 for a single-phase electrical network. The system utilizes a PZEM-004T sensor to measure electrical parameters in real time, relays and contactors to control the capacitor bank, and the Blynk IoT platform for remote monitoring. System performance was evaluated under gradual load increase, gradual load decrease, and random load variation conditions. The results show that the proposed system was able to improve the power factor from 0.44 to 0.79 under inductive load conditions and maintain the power factor within the range of 0.80–0.98 under various operating conditions. The implemented relearning method enabled the system to adjust the capacitor combination when load reduction occurred, thereby reducing the risk of overcompensation. Validation results between the PZEM-004T sensor and a clamp meter indicated an average error of 1.4%. In addition, the Blynk application successfully displayed electrical parameters and capacitor bank status in real time. The results demonstrate that the proposed APFC system can automatically improve the power factor and adapt reactive power compensation according to load variations in a single-phase electrical network.
