Abstract

This thesis discusses Tafsir Tarjuman al-Mustafid by Abd al-Rauf al-Sinkili. The object of this research is the tafsir text of Surah al-Qalam. The background of this research lies in the condition of the Tarjuman al-Mustafid text, which is difficult to access directly due to the use of classical script and language; therefore, transliteration is required to present the text in a more readable form. This study aims to transliterate the text of Surah al-Qalam in Tafsir Tarjuman al-Mustafid, to map its interpretative characteristics, and to examine specifically the indications of isyari interpretation in QS. al-Qalam verse 48. The method used in this research is qualitative, and the type of research is library research with a philological approach. The results of the study show that, philologically, the tafsir text of Surah al-Qalam in Tarjuman al-Mustafid uses classical Malay, presented in a concise and easily understandable style. Al-Sinkili’s interpretation shows textual alignment with Tafsir al-Jalalain, incorporates references from Tafsir al-Baidhawi and al-Khazin, and briefly includes several major qira'at variants. In addition, the interpretation of Surah al-Qalam verse 48 represents a tendency toward isyari interpretation, marked by a shift in meaning that does not directly align with the outward (zahir) meaning, and is constructed based on semantic relations, ta’wil, and the validity of the isyari interpretive method.
