Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of patriarchy and the construction of violence in the film Bolehkah Sekali Saja Kumenangis (2024) by Reka Wijaya. This film focuses on the phenomenon of family communication, which ideally serves as a mental foundation, but is instead represented as a traumatic space due to the dominance of the father figure. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm, this study applies Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis to dissect three stages of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that patriarchy in the film is manifested in the form of physical, verbal, and psychological violence perpetrated by the character Pras against his wife and children. Denotatively, actions such as slapping, forced gripping, and destruction of personal belongings are clear evidence of aggression. At the connotative level, these actions are symbols of oppression of women's autonomy and voice, including restrictions on economic and social access through the confiscation of cell phones. Ideologically, this film constructs the myth that fathers have absolute power in the household and negative stereotypes about mental health institutions. This study concludes that the film successfully represents the systemic impact of patriarchy that damages the mental health of the younger generation, while also providing a critique of the normalization of an exploitative male-dominated culture.
