Abstract

Online games are not only a form of entertainment, but also a social interaction arena that reproduces gender power and inequality. The purpose of this study is to analyze the forms of discrimination committed by men against women when playing Valorant. This study uses the Muted Group Theory framework with The Process of Silencing. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth interviews with three female Valorant players selected purposively. The data was analyzed through a thematic categorization process to identify the forms of silencing experienced by the informants. The results of this study show that female gamers experience a process of silencing that appears in several main categories, namely ridicule, ritual, control, and harassment. Silencing occurs directly through rejection, ridicule, and disregard for strategy, as well as indirectly through the normalization of sexist jokes that cause women to refrain from speaking up. Thus, the condition of female players encourages them to adopt adaptive strategies such as using gender-neutral identities, limiting communication, or choosing to remain silent to avoid conflict. The conclusion of this study is that Valorant isstill dominated by masculine language and communication norms that position women as a muted group. Therefore, collective awareness and the strengthening of an inclusive communication culture are needed to make the gaming space more fair and equal for all genders.
