Abstract

Empirical findings from this study indicate that disruptions to ontological security during cultural transition are associated with emotional communication in self-disclosure, which emerges as a key mechanism through which identity negotiation unfolds. Using a phenomenologically informed qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with international students (n = 6) to gain in-depth insights into their lived accounts of cultural transition. Data were analysed using a multi-stage approach comprising a phenomenological thematic analysis to identify emotional communication dynamics, followed by a thematic narrative analysis to trace identity transformation over time. Findings reveal that emotional communication manifests as openness, shared awareness of emotional states, and communicative behaviour. Social-emotional adjustment progressed from an initial defensive performance to a reciprocal, stable exchange and ultimately to a stage of reflexive mastery. Through the Semiopragmatics Approach to Communication theory, the analysis demonstrates how the breadth and depth of social penetration facilitate the transition from prefiguration to configuration, and then to figuration. This study highlights emotional communication as a promising focus for future scholarly inquiry into how attitudes develop during conflict in relationship formation among international students. During university onboarding orientations, sensitising students to emotional communication may support international students’ social-emotional adjustment and identity negotiation.
