Abstract
The development of digital technology has made the use of gadgets and online games part of the daily activities of elementary school-aged children. The increasing intensity of online gaming raises concerns about negative impacts, such as addiction, decreased concentration in learning, and changes in children's behavior. Therefore, parental interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in monitoring and directing appropriate gadget use. This study aims to determine the role of parental interpersonal communication, the types of communication used, and parental mediation strategies in managing online game use among elementary school-aged children in Klaseman Village, Sukoharjo. A descriptive qualitative method was used with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The research informants consisted of six mothers with children aged 7–12 who actively play online games such as Free Fire, Mobile Legends, and Roblox. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing stages, and was validated through source triangulation to ensure data validity. The results show that parental interpersonal communication plays a significant role in shaping children's behavior and self-control in online game use. Mothers also implement parental mediation strategies, such as providing an understanding of the negative impacts of online games, limiting play time to 1–3 hours per day, and providing direct supervision in monitoring the content accessed by children. Furthermore, environmental factors such as peer influence and the trend of playing together (MABAR) also influence children's interest in online games. This study concluded that the quality of interpersonal communication between mothers and their children, particularly emotional closeness, openness, and consistency in setting rules, significantly influences children's ability to control online game use while balancing learning and social development
