Abstract
This study aims to clarify the process in which students utilise artificial intelligence (AI) tools to prepare and deliver group presentations, as well as to examine their perceptions of the impact of AI use on social interaction and collaborative learning. The study employed a qualitative case study design. The Philosophy of Education course was taken by first semester students in the Department of English Education at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The data were collected through classroom observation and interview with twelve students. The data was analysed using the qualitative data analysis model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. This model includes data display, and data condensation. In order to ensure the Credibility of the data, source triangulation and method triangulation were implemented. The findings suggest that students primarily utilised AI tools during the preparation phase of group presentations. In order to generate outlines, summarise difficult materials, improve grammar and wording, structure presentation points, and prepare potential enquiries, ChatGPT, Grammarly, and other AI supported applications were implemented. AI facilitated the more lucid presentation materials for students. Nevertheless, AI also introduced challenges, such as the reliance on AI generated responses, the weakened level of discussion, and the unequal participation of group members. AI may serve as a mediating instrument when employed reflectively from the perspective of social constructivism, but it could negatively impact collaborative learning when it replaces discussion, verification, and shared responsibility.
