Abstract

The film Keluarga Super Irit (2025) tells the story of a family that makes the principle of frugal living its main identity, giving rise to differences in views between parents and children that create interesting communication dynamics to be studied in depth. This study aims to examine the representation of family communication patterns in the film Keluarga Super Irit through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach and Fitzpatrick's family communication theory, as well as to analyze the ideological construction produced by the film to its audience through Stuart Hall's constructionist representation perspective. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method based on semiotic analysis. A total of nine scenes showing communication interactions between family members were selected by purposive sampling as the unit of analysis. The results of the study found three patterns of family communication: a consensual communication pattern shown by parents respecting children's opinions, but the final decision remains in the hands of the parents; a pluralistic communication pattern shown by accepting solutions from children without hierarchical pressure; and a protective communication pattern as the most dominant pattern characterized by parents as the highest decision makers so that children behave obediently due to the lack of choice. The laissez-faire pattern was not found because parents are always actively involved in every decision. Overall, this study reveals the tension between the illusion of openness and the reality of conformity in the representation of Sukaharta family communication, where the film actively reproduces the ideology that hierarchy in the family is something natural and necessary.
