Abstract
This study examines the role of interpersonal communication between parents and children in preventing child abuse in Kemasan Village, Sawit District, Boyolali. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through in-depth interviews with six families who have children in elementary to junior high school.The findings show that interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in creating a harmonious family environment and preventing abusive behavior. Positive communication—characterized by openness, empathy, support, and two-way interaction—helps establish a safe and nurturing relationship. In contrast, negative communication such as yelling, threats, one-way communication, and authoritarian parenting increases the risk of verbal and psychological abuse. These findings align with DeVito’s Interpersonal Communication Theory, Dahrendorf’s Conflict Theory, and Bandura’s Child Abuse Theory. Overall, the study concludes that effective interpersonal communication is essential in preventing child abuse within the family.
