Abstract

This study aims to examine how English is taught in elementary school, the challenges faced by teachers in teaching English, the strategies used to overcome those challenges, and how teachers develop teaching materials. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants of this research were four English teachers from SD N 2 Tegalgiri, Boyolali, Central Java. The data were collected through 1) observation, 2) interviews, and 3) documentation. The results of this study revealed four main findings. First, in the implementation of English teaching, teachers used three methods, namely 1) Grammar Translation Method, 2) Audio-Lingual Method, and 3) Communicative Language Teaching. Teachers also applied four techniques, namely 1) question and answer, 2) lecturing or presenting the material, 3) drilling, and 4) games. In addition, teachers used three types of media, namely 1) flashcards, 2) online media, and 3) printed media. English teaching in this school mainly focused on vocabulary mastery. Second, this study found four challenges faced by teachers, namely 1) teachers’ educational background, 2) limited time allocation, 3) classroom management in lower grades, and 4) lack of teacher training. Third, to overcome these challenges, teachers used four strategies, namely 1) self-learning before teaching, 2) reviewing the previous material, 3) using simple teaching methods, and 4) using learning media. Fourth, in material development, teachers adapted lesson plans, textbooks, and worksheets based on students’ abilities and classroom conditions. Overall, this study showed that the implementation of English teaching in elementary school is influenced by teaching methods, learning media, teachers’ competence, and classroom conditions.
