Abstract
Critical Nursing Learning requires active student involvement because it is complex and applicable, thus requiring learning methods that can encourage optimal student participation. This study aims to describe active student involvement in classical learning through group discussions in Critical Nursing courses. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The research population consisted of 174 students, with a sample of seventh-semester students in 2025 who had participated in group discussions on pain management and electrolyte requirements selected using convenience sampling. The research instrument consisted of a demographic data questionnaire and the Higher Education Student Engagement Scale (HESES) consisting of 28 items. The validity test results showed that all questionnaire items had a calculated r value greater than the r table (0.587), while the reliability test showed a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.969, so the instrument was declared valid and reliable. Data analysis was conducted univariately. The results showed that student active engagement across all dimensions was in the medium to high category, with a total average active engagement score of 104.91. The online engagement dimension showed the highest average score, while peer engagement had the lowest score, but still remained in the medium category. The conclusion of this study shows that group discussions are effective in facilitating students' active involvement academically, online, cognitively, socially, outside of learning and affectively in Critical Nursing classical learning, although there are still variations in the level of involvement among students.
