Abstract

The "Marriage Is Scary" discourse, which went viral on X, has become a new space for discourse among X users regarding their views on the institution of marriage. This study aims to unravel the construction of meaning in users’ tweets related to this discourse, as well as to explore whether the discourse within the tweet threads of the “menfess” account is merely a form of negative stigma or a reflection of critical awareness. Using a qualitative approach and Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method, this study examines the digital discourse in tweets and replies from netizens in the threads of the @Tanyakanrl menfess account on the X platform. Data collection utilized documentation in the form of screenshots, with the unit of analysis being tweets from X social media users within the @Tanyakanrl menfess account’s threads, which were subsequently analyzed using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis theory. The research findings reveal that the narrative of fear regarding marriage is not merely an emotional expression. More than that, this discourse is a tangible manifestation of users’ criticism and resistance toward patriarchal ideology and gender inequality. Through the X platform, netizens critically renegotiate the meaning of traditional marriage toward a more equitable relationship. Social media has now proven to have transformed into digital discourse.
