Abstract
Background: Swallowing in infants is a complex sensorimotor process that requires coordinated activity of oromotor structures, cervical muscles, and the central nervous system. Impairments in this function may lead to dysphagia, which can negatively affect nutritional intake and airway safety. One form of early motor stimulation that may support swallowing function is tummy time, as it enhances head control and cervical muscle strength. However, empirical evidence specifically examining the relationship between tummy time duration and swallowing ability in infants remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between tummy time duration and swallowing ability in infants aged 4–6 months. Methods: This study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 34 infants aged 4–6 months residing in Mayang, Trangsan, and Blimbing villages, Gatak District, Sukoharjo Regency, were recruited using purposive sampling. Tummy time duration was measured based on the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, while swallowing ability was assessed using the Neonatal Eating Assessment Tool – Breastfeeding (NeoEAT-BF). Descriptive analysis was conducted, and the association between variables was analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results: The findings demonstrated a statistically significant and very strong correlation between tummy time duration and swallowing ability in infants (r = 0.822; p < 0.001). The mean tummy time duration was 222,74 ± 137,94 minutes per week, with most infants meeting the recommended duration. The mean NeoEAT score was 8,00 ± 7,50 where lower scores indicate better swallowing ability. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between tummy time duration and swallowing ability in infants aged 4–6 months. Regular implementation of tummy time in accordance with recommended guidelines may serve as an effective early stimulation strategy to support the development of safe and efficient swallowing function in infants.
