Abstract

This Study aims to analyze the representation of heroism in the film Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. The film does not merely persent action-packed battles against demons, but also constructs moral values that shape the meaning of heroism. This research applies a critical paradigm with a qualitative descriptive approach and empolys Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. The analysis is conducted through visual sign, dialogues, and narrative structures in the film. The findings indicate that heroism in the film is represented through five main aspects: sensitivity (care), sincerity, love, sacrifice and perseverance, and unity. At the denotative level, heroism is depicted through battle scenes, emotional, expressions, and visual symbol such as water vortex techniques, wounded bodies, and protective dialogues. At the connotative level, these signs develop into meanings of empathy, selflessness, emotional commitment, moral resilience, and collecrtive solidarity. At the mythological level, the film constructs the ideology that a true hero is an individual who prioritizes collective interest over personal ones, wilingly sacrifices without expecting rewards, and remains steadfast despite suffering. Through Stuart Hall’s representation theory and Roland Barthes’ semiotics, this study find that heroism in the film is not naturally given but socially constructed through systems of representation embedded with ideological values. As a form of mass communication, anime functions not only as a entertainment but also as a medium for intenalizing humanitarian values that may influence young audiences’ prespective on struggle, solidarity, and humanity.
