Abstract

In this study, I aim to understand the bilingual practices involved in contemporary digital communication, specifically Jennifer Coppens' TikTok videos, which utilize code-mixing between Indonesian and English. I selected ten videos and transcribed 35 statements, applying the most prominent sociolinguistic theories in a qualitative descriptive approach. This study's goals include locating the specific types of code-mixing used, the social functions of these types, and the contexts in which these types are triggered. The findings of the research study show that both type of code mixing that were the most common were alternation and insertion, and that insertion was the most common. Apart from code mixing being a linguistic phenomenon, it also has functions that enable the speaker to express an emotion, give an explanation to the message, shape the social identity of the speaker, and attract the audience. Additionally, this type of code mixing is highly situationally specific, as it is very commonly used in cooking videos, grwm videos, advertisement videos, as well as audience addressing videos. This study concluded that code-mixing is a result of the social media platform's built-in functions that allow for flexibility in video length, and provides a better understanding of bilingual practices in the social media environment. It also provides flexibility for the content creator to interact with the audience amnd respond to the digital norms of the society.
