Abstract

This research discusses the use of irony in the song lyrics Piledriver Waltz by Alex Turner using a pragmatic approach. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of irony found in the song lyrics and to explain the intended meaning of the irony. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are words, phrases, and lyrics lines that contain irony. The data source is taken from the official lyrics of the song Piledriver Waltz. The data are collected through documentation by reading and identifying the lyrics that contain irony. The data are analyzed using pragmatic theories especially Grice’s Cooperative Principle, conversational implicature, speech act theory and Relevance Theory. The results of this research show that there are several types of irony found in the song lyrics, such as verbal irony, situational irony, structural irony, dramatic irony and cosmic irony. The findings also show that verbal irony is the most dominant type of irony. The use of irony in the song helps convey emotional meaning indirectly.
