Abstract

The use of sarcasm in digital communication is very common, especially in YouTube comments which often contain indirect criticism, sarcasm and humor. This is what prompted this research. The aim of this research is to categorize the types of illocutionary speech act and to determine the function of sarcastic expressions in communication indicated by sarcasm in audience comments on the MasterChef Australia YouTube channel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with the data source being sarcastic comments from ten selected episodes of Dessert Masters Australia. Pragmatic theory, especially John Searle’s classification of illocutionary speech acts and Roman Jakobson’s theory of language functions, was used to analyze data collected through comment documentation. The research results show that sarcasm most often appears in the form of assertive and expressive speech acts. Sarcasm in audience comments mostly functions as an emotive and referential element used to convey dissatisfaction, criticism, sarcasm, and humor towards participants, judges, and event production strategies. The results show that sarcasm is an effective strategy to combine evaluation and humor in digital discourse and to demonstrate the dynamics of interaction in online media based conversations.
