Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the violations of child rights depicted in Elisabeth Röhm’s Girl in the Basement (2021) through a qualitative literary research methodology, employing the Sociology of Literature framework and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as the principal theoretical framework. The study focused on three objectives: (1) to identify the types of child rights violations portrayed in the film, (2) to analyze the depiction of these violations through narrative and cinematic elements, including characterization, setting, key events, and style, and (3) to explore the reasons why the film addresses issues of child rights violations. The study employed primary data from the film and secondary data from scholarly publications, interviews, reports on the UNCRC, and reports of real-life abuse. The results indicated that twelve principal UNCRC articles were violated, including rights related to protection from violence, freedom of expression, health, education, adequate living conditions, and safeguarding against sexual and psychological abuse. These violations are illustrated through character, setting, key events, and style elements. The research additionally revealed that the film reflects real child abuse cases and national maltreatment data, highlighting the systemic deficiencies that enable domestic violence and institutional neglect.
