Abstract

Mount Merapi is an active volcano located in Kemalang District, Klaten Regency, Central Java Province, and has a high potential for lahar flood disasters. Lahar floods are one of the dangerous disaster threats because they are influenced by the physical environmental conditions in Kemalang District, which include slope gradient, land use, and soil type. The combination of these factors plays a role in controlling the movement, speed, and distribution of lahar flows, thereby increasing the level of vulnerability to lahar floods in the region. Lahar floods have a high level of danger and in some cases are categorized as national-scale disasters. The high potential for damage and risk of casualties due to lahar floods encourages communities living around the slopes of volcanoes to increase their vigilance, especially during eruptions. Therefore, understanding the characteristics and potential dangers of lahar floods is important as an effort to mitigate disasters and reduce risks for communities in vulnerable areas. The objectives of this study include 1) Analyzing the Level of Lahar Flood Vulnerability in Kemalang District, Klaten Regency. 2) Analyze the dominant factors influencing the level of vulnerability to lahar floods in Kemalang District, Klaten Regency. The method used was purposive sampling with specific research objects. The data analysis method used overlay scoring and a frequency table. Based on the research, the results include: 1) The level of vulnerability to lahar floods in Kemalang District has a tiered pattern based on the land surface elevation factor. This is because the higher the elevation, the steeper the slope, and the steeper the slope, the easier the lahar flow. 2) The dominant factor causing lahar floods based on the slope parameter based on the frequency table, is due to the steep slope.
